Tyne & Wear is the 44th largest county in England yet is the 13th largest by population. This largely because it is made up of the five heavily populated metropolitan boroughs of North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland, all formerly parts of the counties of Durham and Northumberland.
Economically this area was in the doldrums for many years after the decline of the mining and shipping industries but in recent years there has been a largely successful regeneration which can be most obviously seen in the redevelopment of the run down former factories and warehouses along the Tyne in Newcastle and Gateshead.
To many people in the rest of the UK the area is known for the intense local rivalries between the towns, as exemplified by the partisan support for the local football teams.
