The largest single city in North England is Sunderland but the conurbation of Tyneside, which includes Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Hebburn, Jarrow and North and South Shields have a larger total population which makes up 80% of the population of Tyne and Wear.

As of the 2001 census there were 295,106 people aged over 70 living in the North East, approximately 11.7% of the total population.
