Despite close proximity to the City of London, the London Borough of Newham is actually an 'outer London Borough'. Newham borders Barking & Dagenham to the east, Redbridge and Waltham Forest to the north, Hackney and Tower Hamlets to the west and the river Thames/Greenwich to the south. In 2012, the borough hosted a large proportion of the London Olympic events including the swimming, athletics and indoor cycling events. Stratford is the home of the borough's council offices and a very comprehensive east London transport hub, the Westfield shopping centre, being popular with shoppers coming in from Essex by train.
