Despite close proximity to the City of London, the London Borough of Newham is actually an 'outer London Borough'. Newham borders Barking & Dagenham to the east, Redbridge and Waltham Forest to the north, Hackney and Tower Hamlets to the west and the river Thames/Greenwich to the south. In 2012, the borough hosted a large proportion of the London Olympic events including the swimming, athletics and indoor cycling events.
