Durham is the 19th largest county in England and the 23rd largest by population.The county town is Durham, although the town with the largest population is Darlington, which is best known for being the place where the world's first railway line was situated.
It is perhaps best known for having two of the best known examples of Norman architecture in England, with the castle and cathedral in the city of Durham. The city is also home to Durham University, one of the highest academically rated in the country, and also (although it is open to debate) the oldest university in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge. Much of its wealth came from the mining industry, particularly coal and lead.
