Kingston is located to the south west of London and borders the boroughs of Richmond to the north west, Merton to the north east, Sutton to the east and the county of Surrey to the south. The town of Kingston upon Thames was originally a medieval settlement where Saxon Kings would be crowned. Today Kingston upon Thames is one of 10 major metropolitan areas identified in the Greater London Authority's London Plan. The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is the only outer London authority to have the 'Royal' prefix.
