Hampshire borders Dorset/Wiltshire to the west, Berkshire to the north and Surrey/West Sussex to the east. The county is a popular tourist destination with seaside resorts, the South Downs and the New Forest National Park within its boundaries. The county town is the ancient capital of Winchester. Also in the county are the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth, which are administratively independent. Hampshire’s population is some 1.6 million. The county was once home to Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and was also the birthplace of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
