Bedfordshire is a central southern county with a population below 400,000. The county borders Cambridgeshire to the north east, Northamptonshire to the north west, Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire to the west and Hertfordshire to the south. The traditional nickname for people from the county is 'Bedfordshire bulldogs' or 'clangers'. The latter derives from a local dish comprising a suet crust dumpling filled with meat and jam.
