Ynys Mon is an island located to the North West of Gwynedd from the Welsh mainland. Two bridges span the Menai Strait and one of them (the Menai Suspension Bridge) was designed and constructed by Thomas Telford from 1826.
The Norse name Anglesey dates from the 10th century and was adopted much later. The name is also given to a county which includes the island of Anglesey itself. It includes Holy Island on which the town of Holyhead stands, and other uninhabited islets.
Almost three quarters of the inhabitants of Ynys Mon are Welsh speakers.
The county has approximately 20 care homes and nursing homes including those that specialise in dementia care. Holyhead holds the highest concentration of homes with the remainder scattered across the islands other districts.
