Along with Derbyshire, Leicestershire can lay claim to being the most central county in England. Leicestershire borders Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to the north, Rutland to the east, Northamptonshire to the south and Warwickshire to the west. Leicester is the largest city in the county, and is the home of two major universities.

Leicestershire is the 28th largest county in England by area and 26th by population. As of the 2001 census there were 68130 people aged over 70 living in Leicestershire, approximately 11.2% of the total population. Heavy engineering still provides a large part of the economy of the county, with vehicle manufacturers such as Noble and Triumph based in the county. Farming in the rural areas is stiill very important, and has provided two of the great contributions to English cuisine, the pork pie and Stilton cheese.
