Hertfordshire is one of the Home Counties and much of the county is in the London commuter belt. The county borders Essex to the east, the north side of London to the south, Buckinghamshire to the west and Bedfordshire/Cambridgeshire to the north. Hertford is derived from the Anglo-Saxon heort ford, meaning deer crossing (of a watercourse). The name Hertfordshire is first recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in 1011. Deer feature in many county emblems.
