Dyfed was created in 1974 to cover the former administrative counties of Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. It was abolished in 1996 when the three historic counties became unitary authorities. Major towns in the area include Cardigan, Carmarthen, Milford Haven, Fishguard, Tenby and Pembroke.
