Croydon is situated to the south of London bordering the boroughs of Bromley to the east, Lambeth and Merton to the north, Sutton to the west and the county of Surrey to the south. Croydon is the most populous borough in London, with some 335,000 residents. It unsuccessfully applied for city status in 2000 and 2002, so is the second most populous local government district in the UK without city status; Kirklees in West Yorkshire being the first.
