Highdene is a purpose-built home, circa 1987. It is owned and maintained by Anchor Trust, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of support, care and housing for older people. Set in a quiet location and in its own beautiful grounds, Highdene is close to the local shops, pubs and local churches. Most rooms have lovely views of the well-kept gardens.
At Highdene, we provide residential care for 32 older people (male and female) who have physical disabilities and/or moderate dementia. Staff are on hand 24-hours a day to provide care and support.
Accommodation • Single, en-suite rooms with WC and washbasin • Telephone point in all bedrooms for your own direct line • Television point and connections for digital and satellite TV • Call bells in each room providing 24-hour help • Rooms decorated to high standard • We encourage personal items to brought in to enhance your room • Cosy lounges – one on each floor with a TV. The first floor lounge is a quieter area used for reading and painting • There is a garden room and patio area off the ground floor lounge • Tea-making facilities are available to make drinks for you and your visitors • Bathrooms are specially equipped so you can relax in comfort or enjoy a shower if you wish • Lift to upper floors
Dining • There is a dining room on each floor and residents come together each Sunday for tea or celebrations • You can choose from menus each day • Meals are served in the dining room but can be served in your own room if you prefer • Breakfast is served in the dining room or you can enjoy a continental breakfast brought to your room • Choice of healthy and nutritious meals and any special dietary requirements catered for
Leisure activities • We have an in-house library offering a range of books including large print and audio books plus a collection of video tapes • Newspapers can be delivered daily to your room • Highdene has an elegant and well-kept garden to sit out in summer • CD/ stereo, television and video player are provided in our floor lounge • Residents and staff arrange events including quizzes, arts and crafts, day trips, entertainers and exercise classes • Regular interdenominational church services are held • Residents are encouraged to play a part in daily living activities, which can include assisting with vegetable preparation, gardening and light house-keeping • Games are available such as board games, dominoes, etc • We have a hairdressing salon
Facilities • Wheelchair access and car parking are available • Pets are welcome by arrangement • We have a personal laundry service • A pay telephone is available • Religious services and meetings are arranged • Smoking policy: in own room
Health and personal care • Residents keep their own GP if possible otherwise there is a GP available on request • Our Hairdresser visits weekly • Our Chiropodist visits every 4-6 weeks or on request • The District Nurse and Dentist visit by arrangement • The Physiotherapist visits by arrangement • Holistic therapies – details of local providers are available
Local area The town of South Shields is 1 mile away and we have the following facilities nearby: bowling green and theatre 1 mile, swimming pool ½ mile, Newcastle Railway Station 9 miles, Tyne Dock Metro Station 500 yards. Close to excellent bus routes to Newcastle and Sunderland. Highdene is also a short car ride from the coast and its historic parks. The nearest hospital is South Tyneside, which is only ½ mile away.
