Location

Willows Residential Home is situated about 6 miles south of Bury-St-Edmunds, in the village of Lawshall. The home is set in 2 acres of tranquil, landscaped gardens and is surrounded by countryside. Originally a farmhouse, Willows has been extended over the years and is now home to 25 residents.

Aims and Objectives

Established for 12 years, Willows Residential Home offers a highly professional care service for the elderly, with a personal touch. We are pleased to accept residents for long term and short term for convalescence and holiday stays. When people have worked hard throughout their life and have been committed to helping others, we think they deserve extra cherishing. They need a home where individuality is emphasised, with staff that have time to give attention to small detail, and where they have the choice of enjoying the company of like-minded fellow residents.

Philosophy Of Care

Willows Residential Home aims to provide its residents with a secure, relaxed and homely environment in which their care, well being and comfort are of prime importance. Carers will strive to preserve and maintain the dignity, individuality and privacy of all residents within a warm and caring atmosphere, and in so doing will be sensitive to the resident’s ever-changing needs. Such needs may be medical/therapeutic (for physical and mental welfare), cultural, psychological, spiritual, emotional and social, and residents are encouraged to participate in the development of their individualised Care Plans in which the involvement of family and friends may be appropriate and is greatly valued.

The Buildings and Gardens

  • Large landscaped gardens surround the home
  • There is a large lounge and dining room
  • A large garden is accessible to residents and ramps are provided for the use of wheelchairs.
  • There are two assisted baths on the ground floor and 1 assisted shower on the first floor.
  • The kitchen is located on the ground floor
  • The menu is displayed on the notice board
  • The laundry is housed in the main building

Medical Facilities

  • The home has moving and handling equipment to help in the transfer of residents who have been assessed in needing this assistance
  • The home can be equipped with adjustable high/low beds should the residents assessment indicate the need of such a bed
  • The home provides both a “stand-on” and “sit-on” weighing machine •
  • The home has pressure relieving equipment used when a resident’s assessment indicates its need.
  • District Nurses can also provide additional equipment when necessary.

Our Staff

The home employs a Manager, a Deputy Manager, 3 Senior Carers, 15 Care Assistants, 4 Kitchen Staff, 4 Domestic staff, 1 laundry assistant and 2 maintenance staff. Staff are selected for their qualities of reliability, integrity, skill, friendliness and professionalism. Our objective is that that all Care Assistants should hold a minimum of NVQ level 2 in Care. All new members of staff are strongly encouraged to achieve this important qualification. The home also sends selected staff on external training courses for such topics as Food Hygiene, Patient Handling, Care of the Elderly, First Aid, and Drugs Practice. Therapeutic and Social Activities The home policy on “Therapeutic and Social Activities” takes into account the clients’ interests, skills, experiences, personalities and medical condition. We offer a wide range of activities designed to encourage the client to keep mobile and most importantly take an interest in life. Staff encourage and in some instances are able to help clients to pursue their hobbies and interests. Daily activities with the staff include going for walks, manicures, playing games and gentle exercise.

Entertainment

A party night is held once a month on a Saturday night. This can be a themed party such as Halloween, Easter, St. David’s Day, etc. We also have outside entertainers visit the Willows, who provide a wide range of music. Traveling theater groups provide an Easter parade and also a Christmas Pantomime. Meals Willows specialize in good home cooking. Menus will be varied and favourite dishes and special diets can be catered for. Residents are encouraged to eat in the dining room but may eat in their own room if this is their choice. Tea, coffee and other hot drinks are served and available 24 hours a day.

Visitations

Clients interested in coming to Willows Residential Home are encouraged to visit the home and sample the atmosphere and level of service. This gives the client time to get to know the staff and adjust to new people and surroundings. A month’s trial period is always given before taking permanent residency.
