Winterbrook Nursing Home is a small friendly registered nursing home, set in an acre of picturesque gardens, about half a mile south of the attractive Oxfordshire town of Wallingford. Our aim is to make Winterbrook a true home from home for the elderly, chronically sick, terminally ill and those requiring convalescent or respite.
The home was a private residence until 1992 when it was converted and extended to provide accommodation for 26 elderly and frail residents in either individual or shared rooms. The aim of this guide is to provide Service Users and their friends and relatives with a clear statement of the purpose of, and details relating to, the home and the nursing care that we provide.
Philosophy of Care
Winterbrook is a nursing home which provides high standards of nursing care for ‘the whole person’ in a safe and pleasant environment. Service Users are male or female, aged over 60, who are judged, on medical advice, to be in need of continuous nursing care. The management and staff believe in providing each Service User with a level of comfort and lifestyle that corresponds as closely as possible to that enjoyed by them prior to admission.
In consequence, all activities within the home are devised with full concern for the Service User’s mental and physical welfare, and all staff are actively encouraged to undertake the necessary training in order to meet these needs. In particular, staff are concerned to ensure that a Service User is able to retain their personal privacy, dignity and independence so far as the individual's potential allows. To this end:
- Where possible, each Service User has their own
private room and relatives and friends are encouraged to visit at times convenient to them.
- The Service User makes informed choices both
about the care that is provided and about aspects of their daily living such as clothing, meals, social activities and room furnishing.
- A dedicated team of first level nurses,
supported by trained carers and ancillary staff, provide twenty four hour nursing care.
- Individualised nursing care plans for each
Service User are drawn up by the manager and nursing staff which are intended to maximise the retention of their individuality and independence.
Close liaison is maintained with the Service User’s relatives and General Practitioner in delivering care appropriate to the individual.
- Multi-disciplinary team facilities such as day
care, physiotherapy, chiropody, hairdressing are arranged as required.
- Regular church services are held within the
home to meet the spiritual needs of different denominations.
- Nutritious meals with choice are served in a
pleasant comfortable environment within the home.
- Service Users are encouraged to remain
stimulated and engaged through activities designed to meet their social, hobby and leisure interests. Admission to Winterbrook
Winterbrook Nursing Home aims to provide a warm, caring and friendly environment that respects and maintains the well-being of each Service User. The first 4 weeks residence at Winterbrook is regarded as a trial period. All service users are fully assessed by the home’s manager for their medical and other needs before admission.
