Along with Derbyshire, Leicestershire can lay claim to being the most central county in England. It is the 28th largest county in England by area and 26th by population. Leicester is the largest city in the county, and is the home of two major universities.
Heavy engineering still provides a large part of the economy of the county, with vehicle manufacturers such as Noble and Triumph based in the county. Farming in the rural areas is stiill very important, and has provided two of the great contributions to English cuisine, the pork pie and Stilton cheese.
As of the 2001 census there were 68130 people aged over 70 living in Leicestershire, approximately 11.2% of the total population. Within the region there are 282 residential care and nursing care homes providing services for older people and people with learning disabilities.
